Airbnb/VRBO
This is my most used form of booking rooms when I travel. Tips on using these sites: read the reviews, thoroughly. How many reviews are there? How far do they date back? Look for answers to questions you have in your head. ASK those questions to the host. Really examine the photos, maybe take them to the CSI unit in your local city.
You can get some fairly cheap rooms on here, especially if you are splitting they are comparable to hostel prices.

Hostels
So I don't have a lot of experience with Hostels, but I will gladly tell you my story of the time i TRIED to stay in one. I booked a hostel in Iceland, I won't give the name because it's not their fault. When I arrived in the room all of the beds were taken, but 1 so I went ahead and set my stuff up and sat down to rest for a second...1 second, before some of the new roomies came in and one of them threw up everywhere. I debated on asking for another room, but instead I booked a $200 hotel room and ordered in lobster pizza. That's what I get for trying to save money. With that being said, there are a lot of nice hostels around the world, several of which I have saved for future trips.
